James "Jimmy" Alexander Tappan

February 18, 1927 - August 20, 2008

James Alexander Tappan, 81, passed away August 20, 2008 in Helena. Mr. Tappan was born February 18, 1927 in Helena to parents Clare Matthews Tappan and Moore Tappan. He graduated from Helena High School and attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he joined Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

He served in the United States Army as Military Police in the Occupation of Italy from 1945 to 1947.

After his service with the U.S. Army, James returned to Helena where he presided over several businesses, including Tappan Coal Company, Tappan Abstract Company and an accounting practice.

He contributed his time to the community of Helena as Civil Service Commissioner for 35 years, officer of Maple Hill Cemetery for 30 years, and Vestry member and Treasurer of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

He was an avid outdoorsman and treasurer of Porter Lake Hunting Club in Helena.

James was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Moore Tappan of Brandon, Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gloria Young Tappan; five sons, James A. Tappan, Jr. and Sharon of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Charles M. Tappan and Brooke of Helena, David A. Tappan and Devora of Batesville, Arkansas, John C. Tappan and Debbie of Dry Fork, Virginia, and Philip A. Tappan and Gina of Little Rock, Arkansas; twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Johns Episcopal Church, 625 Pecan Street, Helena, Arkansas 72342, or to the charity of your choice.

A memorial service for James Tappan will be held at St. Johns Episcopal Church on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. following a private interment.
