Obituary of Sidney R. Barger

Sidney R. Barger, 71, a retired insurance executive and a television pioneer, died of complications from diabetes Friday at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He lived in Wayne.

Born in Cleveland, Mr. Barger was a graduate of Case Institute of Technology, and supervised camera crews filming battle scenes in the South Pacific and Europe for the Navy during World War II.

After his discharge in 1945, he worked for a film-producing company and in television. Mr. Barger was director of a Cincinnati TV station and worked for another in Columbus, Ohio, before entering the insurance field in the mid-1960s.

He started up Marketing Services Inc., now in Devon, a company that acts as a consultant to insurance companies and state governments. He retired in 1993.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Touhill Barger; a son, Geoffrey R.; a daughter, Janet; a stepson, John Colehower; two stepdaughters, Manette Hansen and Virginia Hodges; a brother; two grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Lancaster and Louella Avenues, Wayne. Burial will be at St. Davids Church, Valley Forge Road, Radnor.
